OIL PAINTINGS 2015-2017 http://www.brittanyjamesart.com/apps/photos/ OIL PAINTINGS 2015-2017 "Vengeance is Sleeping" 24" x 36" Oil onCanvas 2017 $1200 This painting is about loving something or someone who isn't really there, either physically or metaphorically loving the idea of someone. It's also inspired by the Neko Case song "Vengeance is Sleeping" and the lyrics, "all I had was my invention, and my love invented all of you. Look what thoughts can do" http://www.brittanyjamesart.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=204570591 204570591 "Lucid Dreaming" 36" x 48" Oil on Canvas 2017 $2300 Lucid Dreaming Is about existing in that place between dreaming and being awake; not being able to tell whats real and what's fake. It's half reality, half fantasy. Its also inspired by a trip to Yosemite where the sunset looked like fire on the water, and the word "Werifesteria" which means to wander longingly through a forest in search of mystery http://www.brittanyjamesart.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=204435779 204435779 Swing Ride SOLD Oil on Canvas 24" X 24" 2017 Inspired by a dream and a photo http://www.brittanyjamesart.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=203812309 203812309 "The Marionette" 30"X38" Oil on Canvas 2017 $1700 How much control do we really have over our life? Is our destiny predetermined, or can our actions change our fate? http://www.brittanyjamesart.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=204341291 204341291 "The Wild & the Tame" Oil on Canvas 16" x 20" 2017 $900 A 7 yr old child once interpreted this painting as Good vs. Evil (nest= halo, antlers= devil horns). As I was painting it, I didnt realize that's what it is. I was trying to paint this quote from writer Jeanette Winterson about contradictions of the heart: "What should I do about the wild and the tame? The wild heart that wants to be free, and the tame heart that wants to come home. I want to be held. I don't want you to come too close. I want you to scoop me up and bring me home at nights. I don't want to tell you where I am. I want to keep a place among the rocks where no one can find me. I want to be with you." Wild vs. Tame http://www.brittanyjamesart.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=203216152 203216152 "Home" 16"X20" Oil and Gold Leaf on Canvas 2017 $700 "Home" is about relating to animals better than people. Feeling more at home with innocent creatures who are incapable of hate http://www.brittanyjamesart.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=204341290 204341290 Weird Fishes Oil on Canvas 24" X 36" 2017 $1200 "Weird Fishes" came to me in a dream, but it is also an expression of my thoughts on war and how stupid I think it is. The goldfish, who are dumb innocent creatures, are swimming around aimlessly in a dangerous environment, a tank of knives. I guess in this painting the fish are the soldiers. The red white and blue gum balls clumped together represent America, a country that innocent kids go to fight for when they're not even old enough to have a beer, yet they are old enough to hold a gun and make the decision to kill people over power or greed or religion. The gum ball machine is a childhood toy, representing innocence which is about to be lost. http://www.brittanyjamesart.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=203812310 203812310 "Enchanting Delerium" Oil and gold leaf on canvas 20"X20" 2017 $1500 "Enchanting Delirium" is about hiding behind a mask, which is seen as beautiful on the outside, mysterious on the inside. I was thinking about girls who take selfies with their cell phones and post pictures of themselves all day that have been edited and manipulated digitally to make them look pretty, but they're not real. No one is real anymore and people are enchanted by phoniness. This was also inspired by the scene in the movie "The Labyrinth" where David Bowie the goblin king dances at the masquerade in Jennifer Connelly's hallucination after the guy she thought was her friend gives her a poisoned peach. http://www.brittanyjamesart.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=201812767 201812767 Dark Garden Oil on Canvas 36"x24" 2017 $1100 "Dark Garden" represents being comforted, and protected by nature.; surrounded by natural beauty untouched by man. The outside environment (turpentine drips) is messy, falling apart, destroyed. The human spirit needs places where nature has not been rearranged by the hand of man. http://www.brittanyjamesart.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=204341391 204341391 "Coming Undone" Oil on canvas 24"X48" 2016 $1200 "Coming Undone" Is about breaking down the barriers we hide behind, and revealing your real, true self and imperfections. This was also inspired by lyrics from Radiohead: "hit the bottom and escape" and from the band Stars: "when theres nothing left to burn you have to set yourself on fire." To me, this means that when you finally stop caring what anyone thinks, or when you reach the point when you have no reason to hide your real self, you are finally free. http://www.brittanyjamesart.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=201812776 201812776 "Nesting" Oil on Canvas 24"X30" 2016 $900 "Nesting" is about the biological urge women have during pregnancy to get their "nest" ready for the baby. This nest does not hold a baby but a woman, fragile and exposed. She has created her own nest for herself, and is alone. http://www.brittanyjamesart.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=201812778 201812778 "Moon Child" 22X28" Oil on Canvas 2016 $800 "Moon Child" is inspired by a quote I found: "Night is purer than day; it is better for thinking and loving and dreaming. At night everything is more intense, more true. The echo of words that have been spoken during the the day take on a new and deeper meaning." http://www.brittanyjamesart.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=202720352 202720352 "Fragile" Oil on Canvas 24"x36" 2016 $1600 "Fragile" is about keeping things locked away in your head, in other words keeping thoughts "bottled up"; But, when you try to hide your thoughts, memories, or emotions it is only an illusion that they are tucked away safe in your head? they can be opened up, or released at any time without warning. I created this painting while thinking about this, the idea of suppressing memories and hiding them away in a place as fragile as glass. http://www.brittanyjamesart.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=201812775 201812775 "Primitive" 30"X40" Oil on Canvas 2016 $1400 "Primitive" happened after visiting the wolf sanctuary in Jackson NJ. I was thinking about animals who belong in the wild and were never meant to be tamed that were taken out of their environment and placed in a world where they don't belong. Is it really possible to tame something wild, or is it an illusion? I can relate that thought to people or animals. We are all the same. http://www.brittanyjamesart.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=202720353 202720353 "Cocoon" Oil on Canvas 30X40" 2016 $1500 "Cocoon" Is about transformation. Its also about the conflict of feeling safe in a cocoon but wanting to escape to become your better self. Once caterpillars finally transform into butterflies, they only live a few weeks. We waste too much time being afraid to leave the safety of the "cocoons" we built for ourselves, and when we finally figure out how to be free its too late. Live each day like its your last. http://www.brittanyjamesart.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=203215954 203215954 "Poison" Oil on Canvas 24X48" 2015 $1300 This was inspired by Frida Kahlo and her garden. She had a plant hanging from the ceiling that resembled a heart. In my painting, the flowers coming out of the heart are oleander and hemlock, two of the most poisonous flowers. The idea was also inspired by a quote from Frida Kahlo: "There is nothing absolute. Everything Changes. Everything Moves. Everything Revolves. Everything Flies and Goes Away." Leaving behind a heart that is damaged. http://www.brittanyjamesart.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=201812777 201812777 "Falling or Flying" 16"X20" Oil on Canvas SOLD 2015 Lyrical Inspiration: "Are we Falling or Flying Are we Living or Dying" http://www.brittanyjamesart.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=201813031 201813031 "Entrapment" Oil on Canvas 24"36" 2015 $900 Lyrical Inspiration: "God Bless Me Im a Free Man With No Place Free to Go" ~Neko Case There is another line in a Neko Case song called Middle Cyclone that says "to be a spiderweb trapped in your lashes for that I would trade you my empire for ashes, but I choke it back how much I need love". To me, its about wanting to be loved but having a fear of being trapped by it http://www.brittanyjamesart.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=201812774 201812774 Werifesteria Oil on Canvas 24"X36" SOLD 2015 Hearts are wild creatures Werifesteria: to wander longingly through a forest in search of mystery http://www.brittanyjamesart.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=200689057 200689057
